Ysbyty Alltwen Hospital

Beautifully situated on the edge of Snowdonia National Park in northwest Wales, the Ysbyty Alltwen Hospital is a highly sustainable and naturally therapeutic environment delivering new standards of healthcare for patients and staff. 

The hospital is defined by its outdoor surroundings, and it maintains this relationship between interior and exterior through the use of local stone, white render, and natural timber cladding. Outside views were maximized to make the most of its dramatic setting. The building also uses bio-fuel as a primary natural heating source, designed around an internal winter garden space that enables its natural ventilation and heating systems. 

The repurposed site was formerly used as a rail interchange and ironstone mine. Due to the environmental and ecological sensitivity of the area, the design process was subject to comprehensive consultations with local interest groups to ensure a minimized natural impact before taking its final form over a three-year period. 

Cutting edge medical facilities and amenities dramatically elevate the region’s standard of patient care. Ysbyty Alltwen includes a 30-bed ward, outpatient department, day hospital, minor injury and radiology unit, and a large base for the organization’s community mental health team.
